Navigating Life’s Winds: Faith, Gratitude, and Overflowing Hope

Finding peace, joy, and hope through faith, life’s challenges, and the grace of God’s Spirit.

Life has a way of throwing unexpected winds our way—each gust either knocks us off course or strengthens our resolve. Looking back on my journey, I see how these winds shaped my character, teaching me perseverance, adaptability, and faith. Today, I’m 80 years old and deeply grateful for every twist and turn because they’ve all drawn me closer to God. As I reflect on what’s been most meaningful, I’m reminded of the way God fills us with hope and peace, even in the most turbulent seasons.

Romans 15:13 encourages me daily: “I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit” (Romans 15:13, NLT).

Setting the Sail with Faith

Growing up in Hawaii, I fell in love with sailing. Navigating the ocean taught me to trust in the unseen, adjust my course, and persevere through every swell. It wasn’t always smooth sailing, but the more I sailed, the more I learned. Later, these principles became the bedrock of my life and career. Much like adjusting sails to catch the wind, I found that faith means surrendering control, trusting God to guide us through calm and storm. Faith isn’t passive; it’s an active, intentional choice to believe in the One who holds it all together.

Choosing Joy and Gratitude in Every Season

One lesson that took me a while to learn was that gratitude isn’t just a feeling—it’s a practice. Life can bring us seasons of joy, and sometimes seasons of heartbreak. But through every trial, choosing gratitude has been a game-changer.

Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.”

Even in moments of uncertainty, I’ve seen God provide peace that fills my heart, reminding me that no wave is too big for Him.

Overflowing Hope: A Gift from the Spirit

In my journey of faith, I’ve come to see hope as an anchor that holds us firm. In times when I felt the weight of life’s storms—whether navigating career decisions or family challenges—God’s hope filled me, encouraging me to keep going. By the power of the Holy Spirit, our hope overflows, transforming every situation. I see each day as an opportunity to let that hope shine brightly, and I want others to know that they, too, can be filled to overflowing.

Summary:Life’s journey, like the ocean, comes with its highs and lows. Yet through faith, gratitude, and the power of the Holy Spirit, we can experience an abundance of joy, peace, and hope that sustains us. Wherever you are today, may you feel encouraged to trust in God’s plan, to find joy in the present, and to let hope guide your steps.

Finding Faith in a Divided World—Lessons from Paul’s Letter to Today’s Church

How the timeless truths of Paul’s message to Corinth inspire strength and unity in modern faith.

In a world that feels increasingly divided, I often find myself wondering how we, as believers, can stay united in faith. The church today mirrors the ancient city of Corinth—a bustling center of culture and commerce, but one facing the constant pull of worldly influences. When I look at Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, I see a powerful message not just for them, but for us today. Paul’s words, written nearly two thousand years ago, are like a breath of fresh air reminding me that no matter the struggles or distractions, God’s love, grace, and calling remain with us. It’s a story of divine strength in weakness, and it fills me with gratitude and hope.

Called and Set Apart

Paul didn’t shy away from calling the Corinthian church “sanctified” and “called to be holy,” even though they struggled with division and sin. Much like Corinth, our world today is filled with diversity of thought, backgrounds, and beliefs. And just as Corinth was known for its love of sports and philosophy, we see similar obsessions around us. But here’s the beauty—Paul reminds us that, despite our flaws, we are still called to be holy. As he wrote, “He will keep you strong to the end so that you will be free from all blame” (1 Corinthians 1:8, NLT). That promise gives me comfort, knowing that God is not finished with us yet.

A Church Enriched by Grace

One of my favorite parts of Paul’s letter is his gratitude for the Corinthians. In 1 Corinthians 1:4, he says, “I always thank my God for you and for the gracious gifts he has given you, now that you belong to Christ Jesus.” It’s amazing to think that even when we feel inadequate or unworthy, God has already blessed us with everything we need. Today’s church is rich in gifts, from knowledge to compassion to wisdom—qualities we often overlook. Reflecting on this helps me appreciate the gifts I see in others and reminds me to express my own gratitude to God more freely.

God’s Faithfulness Through Our Failures

We all fall short. Paul acknowledged the struggles and failures in Corinth, yet he rejoiced in what God was doing within the church. He saw God’s hand in their growth, even amid their flaws. It’s the same with us; God’s grace covers our imperfections. I find comfort in the promise of Philippians 1:6: “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished on the day when Christ Jesus returns” (NLT). This scripture encourages me to trust that God is not only working in me but in the entire church body.

Summary:Paul’s message to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 1:1-9) is a timeless reminder that, though we live in a divided and often challenging world, we are enriched, chosen, and kept firm by God’s grace. Embracing these truths helps me live with gratitude and assurance that God’s work is ongoing, and His presence is unfailing.

Letting Go of “You Ought To” and Embracing Grace: How Romans 14 Transformed My Relationships

Discover the freedom in accepting others without judgment and letting God be the ultimate guide.

I was the king of the “You OUGHT to…” statements. Whether it was how people should spend their weekends, what they ate, or what music they listened to, I always had an opinion. But one day, God tapped me on the shoulder through Romans 14, and I realized: it wasn’t my job to tell others how to live. Instead, my role was to enjoy each person, appreciate our differences, and let God handle the rest. Spoiler alert—life got a lot more fun after that!

Guarding My Heart, Not Yours

It hit me that while I had been so focused on what othersoughtto do, I had neglected to protect my own heart and mind. Proverbs 4:23 (NLT) says, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” This was a wake-up call. It wasn’t about pointing fingers at someone else’s choices—whether they watched a certain movie or played a video game I didn’t approve of—it was about what I allowed into my own heart. I started focusing on living in a way that kept me aligned with God’s purpose, without trying to play moral referee for everyone else.

No More “You Ought To”: Loving Without Limits

Romans 14:1 (NLT) reminds us, “Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong.” This completely shifted my perspective. I began to see that all those “You OUGHT to” thoughts were rooted in judgment rather than love. My job wasn’t to make people fit my mold but to love them for who they are. I stopped saying, “You ought to avoid that show,” or “You ought to stop eating that,” and started saying, “How can I enjoy and support you right where you are?”

One friend of mine, for example, chooses not to eat meat for spiritual reasons. In the past, I might have thought, “You ought to lighten up!” But now, instead of seeing her choice as something I needed to fix, I just appreciated the conviction behind it. Romans 14:3 (NLT) says, “Those who feel free to eat anything must not look down on those who don’t.” It’s about honoring the person, not changing them.

Enjoying Each Other, Letting God Be the Judge

Romans 14:13 (NLT) puts it perfectly: “Let’s stop condemning each other. Decide instead to live in such a way that you will not cause another believer to stumble and fall.” I stopped feeling responsible for correcting others’ choices and realized I could simply enjoy our differences. If someone’s way of living doesn’t match mine, that’s okay! We’re all accountable to God, not each other.

Instead of focusing on what othersoughtto do, I started asking myself, “How can I bring more love and joy into our relationship?” Whether it’s sharing a meal, attending a Sunday service, or simply having a deep conversation, I’ve found that life is a lot richer when I allow God to be the ultimate judge. After all, He knows the heart better than I ever could.

Freeing Myself From Judgment

The freedom I’ve gained from letting go of judgment is profound. I’m no longer weighed down by the need to control or “fix” others. Romans 14:17 (NLT) says, “For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” That’s where the joy is—in living out love and letting God handle the rest. By shifting my focus from judgment to joy, I’ve experienced more peace in my relationships, and I’m grateful for it every day.

Summary

Romans 14 taught me the beauty of letting go of “You ought to…” and embracing a life where love, grace, and unity take center stage. Rather than focusing on correcting others, I now focus on enjoying the people around me and trusting God to guide us all. It’s amazing how much more joyful life becomes when we let God be the judge and simply love one another.
