How listening, honesty, and faith shaped my journey to success in business and beyond.
There was a time when I believed that the greatest thing I could offer someone was a strong business lead. You know—connecting the right person to the right opportunity at just the right time. I spent decades in the business graphics world, where timing and trust were everything. But I’ve come to realize that there’s one introduction—one referral—that stands above all others.
It’s the referral I gave when I pointed someone to Jesus.
This is the story of how my journey in business, networking, and faith collided—and how it taught me timeless strategies for success, not just in my career, but in life.
Start by Listening for the Deeper Need
In my professional life, I learned to keep my ears open—not just for sales pitches or business needs, but for what wasn’t being said. A client might say, “We’re struggling with our brand,” but I could hear the fatigue behind the words. Stress. Doubt. Insecurity. I’ve learned that the same applies in everyday life.
People are walking around with burdens they rarely speak aloud. When I began truly listening, I discovered that the real breakthroughs came when I paid attention to those unspoken needs.
“Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.” — James 1:19 (NLT)
Whether you’re in a boardroom or a coffee shop, truly listening is one of the most loving things you can do.
Be Honest About What You Know—and What You Believe
One of my best referrals in business came with a simple preface: “I know a guy who’s good, honest, and does what he says he’ll do.” It wasn’t flashy, but it was truthful—and it opened the door.
Likewise, when I share my faith, I don’t start with a sermon. I start with honesty: “Here’s what I’ve experienced. Here’s how Jesus helped me through it.”
People respect real. They connect with sincerity. If you want to build a life or a career that lasts, root it in truth.
“Instead, we will speak the truth in love, growing in every way more and more like Christ.” — Ephesians 4:15 (NLT)
Act When the Heart is Open
I recall meeting a man at a networking event who casually mentioned that he was feeling “lost.” He meant it in the business sense, but my spirit nudged me. I shared a bit of my story—how I found peace not through more clients or bigger deals, but through Christ.
His eyes softened. He said, “I’ve never thought of it that way.”
We stayed in touch. Months later, he gave his life to Christ.
When someone shows interest or need, act with love. Share your own life-changing testimony. Offer to pray. Invite them to church. You never know when the seed you plant will grow.
“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.” — Galatians 6:9 (NLT)
Avoid the Noise—Focus on the Real Thing
There’s a lot of “busy work” that looks like success but leads nowhere. In business, I learned not every meeting or mixer was worth my time. The same goes for spiritual referrals.
Telling someone, “You should try church,” without offering your hand isn’t a referral—it’s a suggestion. Don’t give vague, empty encouragement. Give a real, personal connection.
The most powerful way to lead someone to Christ is to walk beside them.
The Summary: Life’s Best Strategy
If you want lasting success in life and career, here’s what I’ve learned:
- Listen deeply.
- Be honest.
- Act when the door is open.
- Avoid empty gestures.
- Walk with people.
It all comes down to loving others well and leading with integrity. And when the opportunity comes to refer someone to the greatest relationship of all, don’t hesitate.
It might just be the greatest referral you ever give.
