No Reserves, No Retreat, No Regrets—And Definitely Not Done

No Reserves, No Retreat, No Regrets—And Definitely Not Done

No Reserves, No Retreat, No Regrets—And Definitely Not Done

How a missionary’s legacy and a life motto taught me to pursue purpose with courage and joy.

The Day Those Words Hit Me

Some quotes hit you like a soft breeze; others hit you like a freight train. For me, it was a combination of two. The first: “I’m not dead, I’m not done,” often attributed to Bob Pierce, founder of World Vision and Samaritan’s Purse. The second: “No reserves, No Retreat, No Regrets,” the words of William Borden, a young missionary who gave up unimaginable wealth to serve God—and never made it to the mission field because of an early death at age 25.

A long-time friend of mine reminded me of this motto during a recent conversation. We were swapping stories about life, the ups and downs, and what it means to finish well. He said, “Jim, you’re not dead, and you’re certainly not done.” It was like someone lit a fire under my chair.

I realized in that moment: these aren’t just words for young missionaries or ambitious entrepreneurs. They’re for anyone, at any stage, who still has breath in their lungs and purpose in their heart.

Lesson 1: Keep Your Engine Running—Even in Retirement

Here’s the truth: life doesn’t come with a “finish line” unless you decide to draw one. I’ve met people who treat retirement as the end of the road, a time to slowly fade out of relevance. Not me. If anything, I see this chapter as a wide-open runway for the dreams God planted in me decades ago.

It’s like Paul said in Philippians 3:14 (NLT):

“I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.”

Press on—that’s active, not passive. It means your engine is still running, your purpose still alive, and your contribution still needed.

Lesson 2: “No Reserves” Means Giving All You’ve Got

William Borden wrote “No Reserves” in his Bible after deciding to give up his vast inheritance to serve as a missionary. He meant there would be no holding back, no keeping something “just in case.”

In business, in sailing, in raising a family—I’ve learned that when you show up halfway, you get halfway results. The seasons where I poured everything into my work and relationships were the seasons I saw the most growth, both in myself and in those around me.

That’s true in faith, too. Jesus didn’t say, “Love the Lord your God with some of your heart.” He said:

Matthew 22:37 (NLT):

“You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.”

“All” leaves no reserves.

Lesson 3: “No Retreat” Means Forward Is the Only Direction

Let’s be honest—there are times when the temptation to back up or play it safe feels overwhelming. I’ve had business deals fail, technology ideas flop, and personal projects fizzle out. In those moments, it’s easy to start telling yourself, “Maybe I’m done. Maybe it’s time to pull back.”

But here’s what I’ve found: retreat is the fastest way to lose momentum. You don’t need to have every answer before you take the next step—you just need to keep moving forward.

As Proverbs says:

Proverbs 4:25-27 (NLT):

“Look straight ahead, and fix your eyes on what lies before you. Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.”

In other words: eyes forward, feet moving.

Lesson 4: “No Regrets” Comes from Living with Intention

“No regrets” doesn’t mean every choice turns out perfectly—it means you lived in alignment with your values, and you acted when the opportunity arose.

Some of my most cherished memories come from times when I took a risk: saying yes to a big client project that scared me, agreeing to teach a technology workshop when I felt unqualified, or setting sail in unpredictable weather (don’t tell my younger self’s sailing crew I admitted that).

Those choices taught me that regret rarely comes from failing—it comes from not trying.

Lesson 5: Gratitude is the Fuel for a No-Regret Life

Over the years, I’ve discovered that gratitude is what makes “no reserves, no retreat, no regrets” sustainable. Without it, the journey becomes a grind. With it, every day feels like a gift—because it is.

When I wake up, I don’t think, “What do I have to do today?” I think, “What do I get to do today?”

This attitude shift keeps the fire burning, and it turns ordinary moments into opportunities to impact others.

My Motto Today

Thanks to my friend’s reminder, these two combined mottos—“I’m not dead, I’m not done” and “No reserves, No Retreat, No Regrets”—are more than just inspiring words for me. They’re a personal mission statement, a reminder that whether I’m mentoring, writing, spending time with my grandkids, or learning the latest AI tools, I’m here to live fully, love deeply, and serve faithfully.

Life doesn’t slow down just because the calendar says you’re supposed to be “winding down.” If anything, this is the time to put the sails up and catch the wind God’s sending your way.

Summary

Success in life and career isn’t about perfect timing, endless resources, or flawless execution—it’s about showing up with your whole heart, refusing to turn back, and living so that when you look back, there’s nothing you wish you’d done differently.

Whether you’re starting a new career at 25 or starting fresh dreams at 80, the call is the same: live with no reserves, no retreat, no regrets—because you’re not dead, and you’re certainly not done.

Hey there! Let me share something amazing about connecting with God – it’s way simpler than you might think! 🌟

You don’t need long, complicated prayers to experience His presence. Sometimes a heartfelt “God, help me!” is all it takes. How cool is that?

Think of it like this: it’s not about jumping through spiritual hoops – it’s about having faith and expecting God to show up! Jesus already did all the heavy lifting for us, so we can approach God’s throne with confidence and joy. 🙌

Starting your day with Jesus is like having coffee with your best friend – it’s all about setting aside that special time and getting your heart ready for an awesome connection. When you open your heart with excitement and expectation, amazing things happen! ✨

Want to keep that spiritual vibe going all day? I’ve found that keeping a journal in my pocket works wonders! When life gets a bit crazy, I take quick “prayer pauses” – like spiritual pit stops – to reconnect with God. It’s such a refreshing way to stay in His flow throughout the day! 🌈

Remember, anytime you’re feeling down, you can zoom right back into God’s presence where peace, joy, and provision are waiting for you. It’s like having a VIP pass to the most incredible source of love and strength! 💖

Keeping Your Eyes on Jesus: Finding Peace in Life’s Storms

Keeping Your Eyes on Jesus: Finding Peace in Life’s Storms

In the midst of life’s turbulent waters, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the crashing waves of daily challenges. Like Peter walking on water, we often find ourselves sinking when we shift our focus from Jesus to the storms surrounding us. Yet, this journey from fear to faith is one that transforms not just our perspective, but our entire lives.

The Storm-Tossed Reality

We all face moments when life’s circumstances threaten to overwhelm us. Bills pile up, relationships strain, health concerns emerge, and professional challenges loom large. In these moments, Scripture reminds us of a profound truth found in Philippians 4:6-7: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand.”

The Power of Present Focus

Jesus directly addresses our tendency to worry in Matthew 6:33-34: “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need. So don’t worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries. Today’s trouble is enough for today.”

This isn’t just good advice; it’s a life-changing perspective shift. When we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, we tap into a source of strength beyond our human capabilities. As 2 Timothy 1:7 reminds us, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.”

Practical Steps for Maintaining Focus

  1. Start each day in God’s presence through prayer and Scripture reading
  2. Practice gratitude even in challenging circumstances
  3. Surround yourself with faith-filled community members
  4. Keep a journal of God’s faithfulness

Finding Peace in the Storm

The beautiful promise of Isaiah 26:3 assures us: “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, whose thoughts are fixed on you!” This peace isn’t dependent on our circumstances but on our focus. When we feel overwhelmed, Psalm 46:10 gently reminds us to “Be still, and know that I am God!”

In those moments when the valley seems darkest, we can hold onto the truth of Psalm 23:4: “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.” This intimate presence of God provides comfort and strength when we need it most.

The Transformation Journey

Keeping our eyes on Jesus doesn’t mean our problems magically disappear. Instead, it means we face them with a different perspective and a greater strength. Romans 8:28 reminds us that “God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God.” This promise helps us trust in God’s bigger picture, even when we can’t see it clearly ourselves.

Conclusion

Life’s storms will come and go, but God’s presence remains constant. When we feel overwhelmed, let’s remember to shift our gaze from the waves to the Wave-walker. As we keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, we’ll find that perfect peace that surpasses all understanding, strengthening us for whatever challenges lie ahead.

In the words of Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, says the LORD. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” This promise remains true regardless of what storms we face today.

Remember, the key isn’t the absence of storms but the presence of the Storm-calmer. Keep your eyes fixed on Him, and watch as He transforms your fears into stepping stones of faith.

From Sand and waves to Success: Navigating Life’s Journey with Faith and Purpose

From Sand and waves to Success: Navigating Life’s Journey with Faith and Purpose

From Sand and waves to Success: Navigating Life’s Journey with Faith and Purpose

A personal journey through life’s waves, discovering timeless principles for success while keeping faith at the helm.

Growing up in Hawaii, I learned that life, much like the ocean, has its rhythms of ebb and flow. The gentle lapping of waves against the shore taught me patience, while the powerful swells showed me the importance of resilience. Today, I want to share how these island lessons, combined with faith, shaped my approach to success in both life and career.

Learning to Read the Waves: Understanding Timing

Just as a skilled surfer reads the ocean before paddling out, success often comes from understanding the right timing. Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NLT) reminds us, “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.” This truth has guided me through countless business decisions and life choices.

During my years in business graphics, I learned that sometimes you need to wait for the perfect wave, while other times you must paddle hard to catch the opportunity before you. The key is discernment and preparation.

Building Your Vessel: Developing Skills and Character

Success isn’t just about what you know—it’s about who you become in the process. Proverbs 22:29 (NLT) states, “Do you see any truly competent workers? They will serve kings rather than working for ordinary people.” This verse has always pushed me to excel in my craft while maintaining integrity.

I’ve found that investing in both technical skills and personal growth creates a sturdy vessel that can weather any storm. Whether it’s learning new technologies or developing emotional intelligence, continuous improvement is non-negotiable.

Navigating by the Stars: Following Divine Guidance

Ancient Hawaiian navigators used the stars to guide their voyages across vast oceans. Similarly, I’ve learned that success requires a fixed point of reference. For me, that’s my faith. Psalm 32:8 (NLT) assures us, “The Lord says, ‘I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you.'”

This guidance has been invaluable as I’ve transitioned from traditional business to embracing digital storytelling and AI content creation. When the waters of change get choppy, having this divine compass keeps me oriented toward true north.

Creating Your Crew: Building Meaningful Relationships

No one succeeds alone. Throughout my journey, I’ve learned that building genuine relationships—both personal and professional—is crucial. Like a well-coordinated crew on a sailing vessel, each person brings unique strengths that contribute to the journey’s success.

Leaving a Wake of Blessing: Impact and Legacy

Success isn’t just about personal achievement; it’s about the impact we leave behind. As a father and grandfather, I’ve learned that our greatest accomplishments often lie in how we influence others. Whether through storytelling, mentoring, or simply living by example, we’re all creating ripples that affect future generations.

The Journey Continues

Looking back at my journey from the shores of Hawaii to the digital frontier of AI and content creation, I’m filled with gratitude. Every challenge, every victory, and every lesson learned has been part of a greater purpose. Success isn’t a destination—it’s a continuous journey of growth, faith, and service to others.

Remember, your journey is unique, but the principles of faith, perseverance, and purpose remain constant. Keep your eyes on the horizon, trust in divine guidance, and don’t be afraid to catch those big waves when they come.

Navigating Life’s Storms: Lessons from Noah’s Journey for Modern Success

Navigating Life’s Storms: Lessons from Noah’s Journey for Modern Success

Navigating Life’s Storms: Lessons from Noah’s Journey for Modern Success

A personal reflection on faith, perseverance, and divine guidance in pursuing our life’s purpose and professional calling.

Have you ever felt like you’re building something massive while everyone around you questions your sanity? That’s exactly where I found myself last year when I embarked on a career-changing project that tested every ounce of my faith and determination. Noah’s story has become my go-to inspiration, and today, I want to share how this ancient tale offers surprising insights for our modern professional journeys.

The Blueprint of Purpose

Just as Noah received specific instructions for building the ark (450 feet long, 75 feet wide, and 45 feet tall), I’ve learned that success requires detailed planning and precise execution. In my consulting practice, I’ve seen how this level of attention to detail makes the difference between good and exceptional outcomes.

The Scripture reminds us in Proverbs 16:3 (NLT): “Commit your actions to the Lord, and your plans will succeed.” This truth has become my cornerstone for decision-making.

Perseverance Through the Unknown

Noah’s 370-day journey mirrors the entrepreneurial path many of us walk. The confined spaces, constant responsibilities, and complex dynamics he managed aren’t so different from our modern challenges. During my own professional transitions, I’ve often reflected on Noah’s persistence during those long months when the waters wouldn’t recede.

The Power of Faithful Execution

What strikes me most about Noah’s story is that simple yet profound statement: “Noah did everything just as God commanded him.” In today’s fast-paced world, this level of obedience and attention to detail is rare. Yet, it’s exactly what sets exceptional leaders apart.

Philippians 1:6 (NLT) has been my anchor: “And I am certain that God, who began the good work within you, will continue his work until it is finally finished.”

Embracing the Silence

Perhaps the most relevant lesson from Noah’s journey is learning to trust during periods of divine silence. In our careers, we often face seasons where clarity seems distant. I’ve learned that these moments aren’t setbacks but opportunities for growth and deeper faith.

Building Your Modern Ark

Whether you’re launching a business, changing careers, or seeking your next opportunity, Noah’s story offers timeless principles for success:

  1. Follow your divine blueprint with precision
  2. Prepare for both short-term challenges and long-term sustainability
  3. Stay faithful to your mission, especially when others don’t understand
  4. Build with purpose and excellence
  5. Trust the process, even in silence

Moving Forward with Purpose

Like Noah, we’re all building something significant. Your “ark” might be a business, a career, or a ministry. Whatever it is, build it with the same dedication and attention to detail that Noah demonstrated.

Remember, success isn’t just about the destination; it’s about who we become in the process.
